Resolving Anonymous Intent: A Method for Finding B2B Customers on Reddit

The Signal Problem: Why Reddit is Hard for B2B

Reddit contains a high-density stream of B2B buying intent, but its anonymous nature makes it inaccessible to most teams. While traditional sources like LinkedIn are filtered and indirect, Reddit offers a real-time feed of users describing business problems in their own words. The platform reports 124 million business decision-makers are active, and a full 43% of them are not on LinkedIn. The challenge is connecting their unprompted, timestamped problems to a specific company.

Usernames are pseudonymous and profiles rarely contain professional information. This anonymity makes it difficult to turn a valuable signal into a qualified lead. We built a process to systematically resolve this issue.

A High-Density Feed of User Problems

Professionals use Reddit to request tool recommendations, describe frustrations with existing software, and detail internal process gaps. These discussions happen in specialized communities, or subreddits, which function as industry forums. Communities like r/sysadmin, r/sales, r/devops, and r/productmanagement are filled with practitioners discussing work challenges.

The scale is significant. Subreddits like r/marketing and r/SaaS have over 2 million and 700,000 members, respectively. Even niche, active communities like r/DigitalMarketing see nearly 30 new posts per day. These posts are often explicit requests for help. For example:

  • A user in r/b2bmarketing asked for recommendations on “turnkey” revenue attribution platforms, listing specific vendors they were already evaluating.
  • A member of r/sysadmin sought advice on the “best RMM for a small IT team managing 450+ endpoints,” detailing a clear operational need.
  • A post in r/SaaS requested “real-world feedback” on billing platforms like Maxio, Chargebee, and Stripe for a complex implementation, signaling an active purchasing decision.

Each post is proof of need from a user experiencing a pain point directly.

The Manual Approach and Its Limits

Most teams try to monitor Reddit with simple keyword alerts or by manually scanning subreddits. This approach is not scalable. General social listening tools like Brand24 or Sprout Social are built for brand sentiment, not buying intent. They generate significant noise, as one analysis found that only about 10% of B2B mentions on Reddit show high buying intent. This leaves teams to sift through the other 90% manually.

The primary failure mode is the inability to qualify a potential lead. A post showing clear intent is not actionable if you cannot identify the poster's company.

Our Process for Resolving Anonymous Intent

We developed a multi-step process to connect anonymous posts to target companies. The method relies on triangulating public data points to build a high-confidence link between a Reddit account and a professional identity.

The process is as follows:

  1. Define the Search. First, we identify relevant subreddits and define a lexicon of intent-based keywords and phrases. This could be anything from 'alternative to Salesforce' to 'tool for managing OKRs' or 'our team struggles with'.
  2. Analyze Post History. Next, we analyze a user's post and comment history for clues. We look for technical jargon, mentions of company size or industry, or participation in niche professional communities. While the majority of Reddit users are inactive lurkers, the small percentage of active contributors often leave a rich history of their professional interests. This step has limitations, such as temporary "throwaway" accounts designed for single, sensitive posts.
  3. Cross-Reference Usernames. We then cross-reference the username against other platforms like GitHub, Twitter, or Hacker News. While many users intentionally use different handles to separate their professional and personal lives, a subset maintains a consistent username for personal branding. This step is not always successful but provides a powerful signal when it is.
  4. Triangulate and Verify. Finally, we use the clues gathered to form a hypothesis about the user's identity and employer. A subsequent search on a professional network like LinkedIn can then confirm the individual's name, role, and company.

Case Study: From r/dataengineering to a Qualified Lead

We recently applied this process to a post in the r/dataengineering subreddit. A user described a specific data ingestion problem they were facing at their 'mid-size fintech company'.

An analysis of their post history showed comments on a niche open-source data tool used by a known list of companies. Their username, when searched on GitHub, revealed a profile with a full name and code contributions to that same tool's repository. A final LinkedIn search confirmed the individual was a Senior Data Engineer at a specific, 200-person fintech company. In minutes, an anonymous post about a technical problem became a qualified lead at a target account.

From Manual Research to an Automated System

The difficulty of B2B research on Reddit is not in finding the signal of intent. The difficulty is in resolving the user's identity at a scale that can reliably fill a pipeline. The manual process described here can be used to find a small number of high-value targets.

To operationalize it, we built Drevon. Our system automates the search, analysis, and resolution process, turning public Reddit conversations into a steady stream of qualified accounts for growth teams. You can apply this method yourself or let Drevon do the work.
